Dear 7th Grade Parents and Students,

Welcome to Sand Ridge Junior High! We are thrilled to have you join our school community and look forward to an exciting and successful school year ahead. To help you and your student become familiar with our school, we will be holding a 7th Grade Orientation on August 19 beginning at 3:00 PM. (specific details will be coming closer to that day) This orientation is designed to provide valuable information, answer any questions, and ensure a smooth transition to junior high.

ONE Sand Ridge

We are going to begin our third year of our school culture shift toward positive interactions with peers at school. We call this initiative ONE Sand Ridge. The idea is that no matter our background, differences, abilities, or past problems, we are STRONGER TOGETHER than we will ever be apart. We don’t desire to change what makes us individual, but we do want to become supports for each other. Our ONE Sand Ridge logo embodies this goal showing a top view of a circle of individuals placing their arms around each other’s shoulders and forming a strong support system. We have truly made strides in our professional relationships and understanding of other’s perspectives. We are so happy you and your student will bring your strengths here!

One Sand Ridge TRANSPARENT

Many parents who will have their first student in junior high have similar questions. That is normal! I hope to answer some of those questions here, however, our web site sandridge.wsd.net also has an FAQ page that is quite helpful. It is under the Parents & Students menu.

SUPPLIES

One of the changes you’ll notice from elementary school is that we do not have standard supply lists. Instead, each teacher will provide a disclosure statement at the beginning of the year with any specific materials needed for their class. However, the vast majority of teachers emphasize the importance of bringing a fully charged Chromebook each day, along with the power cord issued with the Chromebook. We will send informaiton once we know when 7th grade Chromeboks will be issued. For other supplies such as paper and writing implements, it is up to each student to choose what works best for them. We encourage you to work with your student to develop an organization method that will help them complete and turn in assignments. Naturally, there is more responsibility placed on the student in secondary schools.

FEES

As you may know, there are fees associated with registering for secondary schools in Utah. The standard fees for the upcoming school year are as follows:

  • $35 Instructional Supply Fee
  • $14 C.C.A. (College and Career Awareness class) Fee
  • $5 Physical Education (P.E.) Fee
  • $8 Science Class Fee
  • *Additional fees may apply depending on the elective classes your student is enrolled in.

For families in need of financial assistance, there is a fee waiver application available. The state sets income maximums each year, and fee waivers must be applied for annually. Please note that the fee waiver application is not the same as the Free or Reduced Lunch application. Both must be applied for every school year.

CLASS SCHEDULES

Class schedules will be available to view in PowerSchool on Aug 7. We do not accept class change requests until after the first 5 school days.

PARENT POWERSCHOOL PORTAL and CANVAS

Our most successful students are those whose parents check Canvas and PowerSchool often and help their student keep up. We are in a modern age where waiting for report cards is not necessary or nearly as effective. Together we can help these young minds succeed. From these programs you are able to reach out to teachers as often as you need. Please allow them at least 1 school day to respond.

BUSES

If you would like to know if your student rides a bus, please use the Bus Stop Locator. **These routes are not set yet and are subject to change often – especially at the beginning of the year. I recommend you check the day before school starts.

LUNCH

Students must have their school ID for lunch. Those will be issued after picture day. Once they are issued, student who do not have their ID (or a picture of their ID on their phone) must wait until those that have their IDs are through the lines. This has helped move our lines along quickly and ensures that each student has plenty of time to eat.

CELL PHONES

Weber School District and Sand Ridge Junior High have adopted a new electronic device (cell phones etc.) policy. We strongly encourage you and your student to know it and talk about it. A very short paraphrasing is that during instructional time devices must not be seen or heard – anywhere in the school. Students have access to school telephones in the counseling office and main office if they need to call home. They may also use their devices between classes and during their assigned lunch time – except in prohibited areas. Data has shown that these devices are very seriously impacting student learning through their distraction. We want our students to learn, progress, and succeed! That is why we are here.

LOCKERS

We do not issue lockers. There are no longer textbooks to haul around and we find that lockers are simply not being used. For example, we had special requests by parents for 12 students to be issued a locker last school year. At the end of the year, only 2 students remembered where their locker was and were actively using it. That being said, a parent may make a request if there is a special circumstance.

We are excited to welcome you to Sand Ridge Junior High and look forward to working together to support your student’s growth and success. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,
