We are excited to share that Sand Ridge has implemented a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program at our junior high school. PBIS is a proactive approach to supporting students' behavioral, emotional, and social needs, ensuring that every student is empowered to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

What is PBIS?

PBIS is a research-based framework designed to encourage positive behavior by setting clear expectations, teaching these expectations, and providing consistent recognition for students who meet them. The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school culture where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to succeed. By focusing on positive reinforcement rather than just consequences for misbehavior, we aim to build a more encouraging and respectful school environment.

How PBIS Works at Sand Ridge

  1. Clear Expectations: We have established clear behavioral expectations for all students in different settings, such as the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and on the bus. These expectations focus on the core values of respect, responsibility, and safety.
  2. Teaching Expectations: Teachers and staff members actively teach and model these expectations through lessons, assemblies, and class discussions. We reinforce the importance of positive actions and behaviors in all school settings.
  3. Positive Reinforcement: Students who demonstrate positive behavior are recognized and celebrated. They earn rewards such as "Ridge Rewards" that can be turned in for prizes at the Smart Mart (Counseling Center). These rewards promote a sense of pride and achievement, encouraging students to continue engaging in positive behaviors.
  4. Support for Students: For students who may struggle with meeting expectations, we provide additional support. This includes individualized interventions and guidance from staff members such as counselors, behavior specialists, and support teams. Our goal is to help every student succeed, no matter the challenges they face.
  5. Consistency and Communication: PBIS is not just an initiative; it is a school-wide commitment. All teachers, staff, and administrators are involved in reinforcing these principles. We encourage communication between school and home, and we invite you to partner with us in supporting your child's development.

How You Can Support PBIS at Home

As a parent or guardian, your involvement is key to the success of PBIS. Here are a few ways you can help support your child’s growth:

  • Reinforce Positive Behavior: Celebrate your child’s successes, whether big or small, and acknowledge their efforts to follow school expectations.
  • Communicate with Teachers: Keep an open line of communication with your child's teachers to stay informed about how they are doing with behavior and to share any concerns.
  • Encourage Responsibility: Help your child set goals and take ownership of their behavior and actions.
  • Be a Role Model: Demonstrate respectful and responsible behavior at home, as this reinforces the lessons your child is learning at school.

We believe that the PBIS framework will help create a supportive, engaging, and positive learning environment for all students. By working together, we can ensure that our students develop the skills they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Sincerely,
Quinn Talbot
